Let me tell you about my most recent solo adventure – a chaotic little loop through Northern MI and the UP that made me question my life choices in all the best ways. It involved goats, scrape metal, bears and just enough solo reflection to remember I’m a badass with a soft spot for my whippet Maizie, who I missed the entire time.
Let’s start from the top. I rolled into what I can only describe as the hillbilly part of Michigan. Which I say with love because hi, I’m a hillbilly-country-city-ghetto hybrid girl.

As I’m cruising down some barely paved road, my radio starts blasting Sweet Home Alabama like I’d tripped though a redneck portal. Felt like the universe was trying to vibe-check me. I passed. Barely.
Paul’s Landing: A Little Bit of Everything
Found this AirBnb called Paul’s Landing – and if you are into rustic cabins, goats and scenic scrap yards holy hell this place is for you. No sarcasm, it was a chef’s kiss. The cabin had a killer view of the land and a perfect place to watch the sunrise. And there was a path – yes an actual path – that led through an artfully chaotic scrap yard.
Oh, and there were goats. And chickens. So 5 stars right there.

Oswald’s Bear Ranch: Where I Fed Grown Bears and Petted a Baby Bear
I’ve seen bears before. Usually at the Zoo, or from the comfort of a YouTube compilation. But…feeding a grown-ass bear apples? That’s next level. Oswald’s Bear Ranch in the UP let me channel my inner wildlife self and hand out snacks to those furry beasts like I was their chubby zookeeper.
AND THEN I GOT TO PET A BABY BEAR.
I swear it looked into my soul and said, “You’re doing okay Stressie.” I needed that.

Tahquamenon Falls: Waterfall Therapy Hits Different in your 50’s
Next up, I hit Tahquamenon Falls – my first time back since my late 20’s when I was on a trip with a friend and still thought flavored vodka was a personality. Now? I’m older, more cynical and slightly lactose intolerant – but the falls? As amazing as F and the views were full-on therapeutic.

And then, the Tunnel of Trees
On the way home, I pulled out one of my Reach International Outfitters scratch offs and it took me to the M-119 Tunnel of Trees. Gorgeous. Twisty AF. But the views? 10/10 worth the drive, but I’m guessing would be even more beautiful in the fall.

Final Thoughts
Solo trips hit different. Especially when you’re surrounded by goats, feeding bears, dodging potholes and listening to country rock on loop. I had a damn good time – the kind that reminds you who the f you are when nobody’s watching.
What’s your favorite “I did this alone and didn’t die” travel memory? Have you ever taken a solo trip to get away from people…and then accidentally made friends with goats and bears? Let me know in the comments.
